The API 2500+ Stereo Bus Compressor allows adjustment of sonic qualities to alter the punch and tone of the stereo mix. The 19-inch, rack-mountable unit features a dual-channel design that can be configured for stereo compression or for use as two separate units via a single compression setting.
Among the many qualities which make the 2500+'s unique is its use of API's patented THRUST® circuit for a chest-hitting, punchy bottom end. Another distinctive feature of the 2500+ is its selectable "old" or "new" compression, with the old style using the "feed back" type of compression found in the API 525, and the new style using the "feed forward" type in which the compressor side chain is fed directly from the unit input. Additionally, the output stage of the 2500+ offers an auto-makeup gain button that permits the user to vary the threshold or ratio while automatically maintaining a constant output level.
Added to the 2500+ is the Mix/Blend circuit. First featured in the limited production 50th Anniversary Edition, Mix/Blend control provides either cross fader or parallel mixing of the compressed and uncompressed signal. Three different user settings are offered:
OFF - compressed signal only
X (Cross) - allows the MIX control to adjust between 100% uncompressed to 100% compressed - increasing one, while decreasing the other
|| (Parallel) - allows the MIX control to dial in compressed signal to blend into the uncompressed signal, (which remains the same).
The 2500+ ensures fidelity with its fully balanced design and two front panel VU meters showing input, output and gain reduction levels. The 2500+ features API's industry exclusive five-year parts warranty and offers the user the reliability, sonic excellence and long life characteristic of all API products.

API 505 DI Direct Input
Like the console-based API 205L, the 505-DI is specifically designed to accept a guitar, bass or keyboard direct input while minimizing any loading effect on Hi-Z instrument pickups. Additionally, the 505-DI's Gain Control is used to normalize an instrument's input level, up to a +4 dBu output level. API's unique TONE control reduces potential low end "mud" in the signal, while turning on the BRIGHT switch adds additional clarity if desired. The various combinations of TONE and BRIGHT controls can eliminate the need for any EQ on the instrument while recording, keeping the signal path short and pure.
This minimal signal path eliminates the need to use a standard direct box, which many times still requires a mic input, equalizer, and a fader to get the signal to a recordable level. The 505-DI is capable of boosting any instrument to a hefty line level without additional amplifiers. Use of the 100K / 400K LOAD switch allows the tone of the pickup to be altered slightly, alternately brightening or darkening the high frequency content. When inserting an instrument with an internal preamp or a line level instrument such as a sampler or a keyboard, the 505-DI offers a 20 dB PAD switch to drop the level without loading, thereby retaining the integrity of the incoming signal.

Artfully combining those circuits with API's proprietary transformers and the incomparable 2520 op-amp, the 512v is a highly musical and rich-sounding analog mic pre, equally at home in commercial recording spaces as it is in smaller home studios. Fully featured and still hand assembled, the 512v exhibits the reliability, long life, and uniformity which are characteristic of all API products.
Originally released in the 70's, the API 525 is a "feedback" type compressor. An input (threshold) control and output (make-up gain) control are provided, along with an additional "Ceiling" fine-tune function which can increase gain reduction (lower threshold) while simultaneously raising output level to match, so the user can alter dynamics "on the fly" without level changes. A compression/limit switch sets ratio at either 2:1 or 20:1. Attack time is as fast as 15u/s. Four auto release modes are offered via two switches, 0.1s, 0.5s, 1.5s, & 2.0s. A De-Ess function inserts an inverse vocal energy curve filter in the detector for effective sibilance/pop reduction. The 525 design has been taken from the original blue prints and spec control drawings from the API archives.Release times vary with frequency, with high frequency / full bandwidth content released faster than lower frequencies for natural envelope tracking. Attack time is fixed, chosen to catch the fastest peaks, without "pumping". Equally useful as a tracking, mixdown or program compressor/limiter, the 525 utilizes "vintage" dynamics control and an easy to use multi-function control set. The 525 has a hard-wire bypass switch, a balanced input, and a pinout that is the same as all the other 500 series modules. Two or more 525s can be linked for multi-channel compression. The API 525 Compressor makes use of the 2510 and 2520 op-amps and exhibits the reliability, long life, and uniformity which are characteristic of all API products. The API 527A Compressor/Limiter takes its place alongside the family of API VCA based compressors, including the 225L compressor and 529, 2500, and 2500+ stereo bus compressors. Anyone familiar with these units will immediately be at home with the 527A.
Features common to the line include "feed forward" (NEW) and "feed-back" (OLD) gain reduction methods selectable on the front panel, provide a choice of "that old way" or "the new way" of compression, for the highest level of flexibility in signal gain control. The "old way" or feed-back method is what most of the classic compressors used for the gain control circuit. The "new way" gain reduction is more typical of the newer VCA type compressors that rely on RMS detectors for the gain control voltage.
There is a "SOFT"/"HARD" knee switch for an "over-easy" type compression resulting in a very natural, uncompressed sound or a typical sharp knee type that lends itself to a much more severe limiting effect.
The patented THRUST® function can be switched in and out via the front panel as well, applying a filter before the RMS detector circuit that preserves that punchy bottom end.
Two or more 527A Compressor/Limiters can be linked together via a DC link allowing multiple units to be combined for stereo and multichannel applications.
The output level remains fairly constant regardless of the threshold or ratio control, much like the "more/less" Ceiling control on the API 525 Compressor. This allows for live adjustments without any noticeable gain changes in the program level.
The 527A Compressor/Limiter makes use of the 2510 and 2520 discrete op-amps and exhibits the reliability, long life, and signature sound which are characteristic of API products.

The beginnings of the 5500 circuit can be traced back to the original 550 equalizer designed by Saul Walker, the founder of Automated Processes Inc. The 550 was designed as a console equalizer, which uses an unbalanced input due to the architecture of the recording console. Because the ergonomics of a console dictate that the controls take up little space, sometimes the number of included functions can be limited. The 5500 is specifically designed to address these limitations; it has a balanced input, a true straight-wire bypass, an integrated power supply with noiseless muting and a range control that expands its versatility to mastering applications. The 5500's input XLR is connected to an active balanced circuit. The unit's output XLR is driven from a transformer coupled output and can drive any load from 600 ohms or more to full output capability. There is no change from input to output in the unit's polarity, so it is suitable in studios using either pin 2 or pin 3 as the "hot" connection. Additionally, the 5500 has a 1/4 inch input connector that interrupts any present signal on the input XLR. It is balanced and can be driven from either balanced or unbalanced sources. A positive signal on the tip will deliver a positive signal on pin 2 of the output XLR. Using the 1/4 inch input does not bypass any internal circuitry and does not change the gain or operating levels.Features: Classic 550b Equalizer design Two range switches to individually alter gain steps Useable as a 550b, 550D or 550M Peak/shelf switch on Hi and Lo bands True hardwire bypass Balanced In and Out on XLR Unbalanced input on 1/4" EQ In/Out switchTechnical Specifications: Power Consumption, Quiescent: .66 Watts Size: 19" X 1.75" (1U) X 11.25" Deep Size (Boxed for Shipping): 23.25" X 6.5" X 16" Actual Weight: 9.68 lbs. API 550aDiscrete 3 Band EQFew equalizers enjoy the respect and admiration of the coveted API 550A. Designed by the now-legendary Saul Walker in the late '60s, the discrete 550A was first used as a modular OEM equalizer. As the industry rapidly embraced the sonic quality of the 550A, it quickly found its way into many custom console designs by Frank DeMedio and other leading engineers. Many of these consoles are still in use today. The 550A provides reciprocal equalization at 21 points in 7 steps of boost to a maximum of 12dB of gain at each point. The fifteen equalization points are divided into three overlapping ranges. The high and low frequency ranges are individually selectable as either peaking or shelving, and a band-pass filter may be inserted independently of all other selected equalization settings. Frequency ranges and boost/cut are selected by three dual-concentric switches, and a pushbutton "in" switch allows the EQ to be silently introduced to the signal path. A small toggle switch is used to insert the band-pass filter into the 550A.The combination of Walker's incomparable 2520 op amp and his "Proportional Q" circuitry gives the 550A user an uncomplicated way to generate acoustically superior equalization. Based on API's original 550 from the late '60s, the API 550b is a continuation of the EQ that played a major role in the history of music recording, but with an additional filter band and several new frequencies. Incorporating API's exclusive circuitry and proprietary components (such as the legendary API 2520 Op Amp), the 550b artfully blends the past with the present. So many hit records still depend on the unique 550 sound that engineers around the world find it to be an invaluable tool. In fact, the 550b design has been taken from the original blue prints and spec control drawings from the API archives. It is unlike any other EQ you will ever use.Rather than offer a huge assortment of complex features, the API 550b provides exactly the right number of controls. Its four EQ bands are overlapped significantly to aid in dual roles as problem solver and sweetening device with each band offering seven switchable filter frequencies that span four-to-five octaves. These frequencies, purposely selected to be musical rather than numeric, were selected by an experienced "who's who" list of the industry's most proficient engineers.Making use of API's "Proportional Q," an innovation designed by Saul Walker in the '60s, the 550b intuitively widens the filter bandwidth at minimal settings and narrows it at higher settings without the need for additional bandwidth controls. This unique feature minimizes the "phase-shift" sound found in many equalizers. In addition, the reciprocal nature of the 550b enables the user to "undo" what has been done previously with exact precision. The benefits of the API 550b are most obvious to those who work with EQ on a continuous basis. If major tonal restructuring is required, the extraordinary headroom made possible with API's 2520 Op Amp offers the predictable and warm analog performance, even under duress. Originally conceived for use in API consoles of the '60s and '70s, the 560 is a unique device designed to accomplish tasks that no other EQ can. Extremely fast to set and reset using accurate zero detents, the curve shaping potential of the 560 remains unmatched. With a wide range of 500 mounting options, from racks to consoles, the 560 proves an invaluable asset to all critical performance applications. Based on API's original 560 EQ, the current production 560 has improved resolution in the ±4 dB area and possesses our exclusive circuitry and proprietary components, including the API 2520 Op Amp.The extraordinary headroom made possible with the 2520 offers consistent analog performance even when using radical EQ curves. Of course, the 2520's ability to drive low impedance loads is key when it is paired with API's custom output transformers. The results are quite audible with better low frequency reproduction and tighter imaging, which gives you that legendary API "punch in your gut" sound. The 10 precision EQ bands make the 560 ideal for signal sweetening and room tuning. A great companion to a parametric EQ, the 560 utilizes API's unique "Proportional Q" design introduced during the '60s. This design intuitively widens the filter bandwidth at lower boost/cut levels and narrows it at higher settings. Additionally, boost and cut characteristics are identical, allowing previous actions to be undone if desired.Reliable, durable and uniform, the API 560 EQ delivers that "one-of-a-kind API sound" with precision easy set filtering and high headroom in a compact package. If you want the sound of classic American music in an easy-to-set graphic EQ package, you want the API 560. The new 8-slot lunchbox includes all of the features that have made the 6-slot lunchbox (500-6B) so well regarded in the industry, including DB-25 (D-Sub) connectors for easy I/O, universal power supply (100 or 250V, 47 to 63Hz), phantom power, and easy rack-mounting with optional rack-ear kit. Built for robust performance, with new toggle switches for channel linking.
The lunchbox gives an engineer the flexibility to bring along specialized EQ effects to any situation: 550A, 550b or 560. The lunchbox utilizes an external power supply. API makes several modules for the lunchbox, including the 512c Mic Preamplifier, the 525 Compressor, the 527 Compressor, the 550A 3-band EQ, the 550b 4-band EQ and the 560 Graphic EQ. Combinations of these modules make perfect stereo recording packages (two 512cs and two 550bs) or vocalist's box (one 512c, two EQs and one 527).
Other uses for the versatile lunchbox include:
Multi-track recording of acoustic and electronic audio sources
Sound reinforcement systems and recording to multi-track formats
Multiple facility projects where portability is a plus
Broadcast and audio for video production
Custom channel input strips
NOTE: The older 560A equalizer may use pin 15 for a "direct output" and must be disabled on the 560A circuit board edge connector by cutting a trace. This will eliminate 48 volts from damaging the 560A series equalizers.
Building on its rich heritage of manufacturing the highest quality mixing and recording consoles, API proudly introduces the new MC531 Monitor Controller. Featuring the same level of craftsmanship found throughout API’s entire product line, the MC531 offers a stand-alone version of the monitoring functionality built into the center section of API’s legendary analog consoles. Specifically designed to include fully-featured monitor control for DAW workflows, the MC531 can integrate seamlessly into any audio production environment where functionality, ease of use and an accurate reference of each audio source is required.
“In our ongoing mission to provide audio professionals with products suited to their evolving workflow, the company decided that a monitor controller would be a natural next step in product design,” commented API’s Director of Engineering Todd Humora. “We’ve certainly had many requests for a unit like this over the years. The MC531 provides users with the exact same circuitry they would find in an API console, plus a few extra features that many people will find useful.”
Drawing inspiration from the monitor control modules of all API consoles, the MC531 features a Main and two Alternate stereo outputs, the latter having individual trims for speaker level matching. Programmable subwoofer integration allows the user to link the Sub with the Main and/or either of the Alternate outputs. With a total of seven selectable stereo input sources (three analog line-level inputs, AES, USB, plus 3.5mm and Bluetooth), the MC531 can meet the monitoring needs of almost any studio setup. Two independent Headphone outputs and a built-in Talkback mic complement the feature set. Of course, the classic API 41-detent Control Room Knob is right at your fingertips.
“API has always strived to engineer products that the audio community needs and wants,” said API President Larry Droppa. “In the case of the MC531, we’re offering a truly professional monitoring solution that’s equally at home in a commercial studio as it is in a smaller, personal creative space. Anyone familiar with an API console will immediately recognize the layout, functionality and the tradition that’s built into this incredible sounding monitor controller.”
